Nursing offers a great career opportunity and many people find fulfilling work in the field. Are you wondering what you should expect from an entry level surgical tech or nurse position? Among other things, you should anticipate working hard and making a difference in the lives of many people day in and day out. Let’s take a closer look.

Typical Duties

Nurses and techs often spend a lot of time working with patients, collecting their histories, prepping them for procedures, taking measures of their biometrics, and administrating medications. Oftentimes, nurses are the main point of contact for many patients. An entry level surgical tech also spends a lot of time working with patients although their work is frequently limited to specific tasks, such as ensuring that the surgical room is ready and that the patient is comfortable.

General Hours

As for working hours, techs and nurses are needed pretty much 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As such, you’ll frequently find that you have a lot of flexibility in terms of picking which shifts to work. If you’d prefer to work the day shift, there’s a good chance that you’ll find a position. If you’d rather work overnight, you’ll probably be able to find an overnight position. Sometimes, finding a night or afternoon shift is a bit easier than finding a day shift, but often options abound.

Physical Demands

Working as a nurse often involves a lot of time on your feet. You may have to visit multiple patient rooms over the course of a work shift. You might also have to chase down medications, food, and more. Many people find this aspect of the job rather helpful as it can make time pass swiftly. Be prepared by wearing comfortable footwear, packing food to eat, and being sure to get enough rest in between shifts.

Expected Knowledge

Nurses also must work with a lot of complicated concepts. From the ethics of proper care to learning how to properly administer medications, there could be a lot on your plate. This can be a good thing, as the work is often quite varied and engaging. That said, it’s often important to pay close attention to details and to double-check to make sure that you’re doing everything right. Otherwise, a patient and their health could be put at risk.
